The Timber collection tells its story
Sculptural bias. For the new Timber collection, Charles Kalpakian has played on the oppositions of soft and rigid in a formal approach. You can really turn around the object: front, back, bottom, top, there's always something to see," says the designer. We invite users to understand how the piece is made."
The starting point of the Timber adventure is this U-shaped frame that structures each sofa. This unusual use of the wooden base is based on the imagination of the cabin. With these arms holding the sides and the back, we dive into a reassuring environment.
How to make this idea of roots concrete? All the research part was materialized by series of drawings, then very quickly the 3D models were necessary to understand how to choose the thickness of the wood.
If all the sketches are in black and white, it is the work of color, used as a door to other horizons, that characterizes the work of the designer. "When I see a color, I see textures and materials. The blue of the collection is linked to very specific references. It is a whole landscape, that of the roofs of Greek villages. As for the red, it's a nod to the Memphis art movement that inspires me a lot."
The choice to make the wooden structure a strong element of the collection is not without links to the know-how of the Kanaan workshop, which Charles Kalpakian knew the high quality brought to the work on wood.
